PA Unemployment Dependent Allowance

Pennsylvania adds a small dependent allowance on top of your Weekly Benefit Rate, but the rules for who counts and how much it adds are specific enough that many claimants either miss it or misunderstand what they can claim.

How Much the Dependent Allowance Adds

The dependent allowance pays up to $8 per week total, covering a maximum of two dependents. The first eligible dependent adds $5 per week, the second adds $3. Combined with the maximum WBR of $605 for benefit years beginning in 2026, the absolute ceiling with dependents is $613 per week before the state's benefit reduction and other deductions.

It is not a large amount, but over 26 weeks of benefits, $8 per week adds up to $208 — enough to matter when every dollar counts.

Who Qualifies as a Dependent

Pennsylvania recognizes two categories of eligible dependents:

Spouse. Your lawful spouse who lives in your household and whom you wholly or chiefly supported at the time you filed your application. A separated spouse who maintains a different address generally does not qualify.

Child. An unmarried child, stepchild, or adopted child under 18 who you wholly or chiefly supported at the time of application. An unmarried child 18 or older can qualify if they are unable to work because of a disability.

If both spouses file claims with overlapping benefit years, one spouse may not claim the same child or children as the other spouse. Each spouse may claim up to two different children.

How to Claim Dependents

You declare dependents during the initial claim application on the UC Benefits System at uc.pa.gov. The system asks for dependent names, dates of birth, and relationship. If you did not add dependents when you first filed, contact the UC Service Center at 1-888-313-7284 to request an amendment.

The dependent allowance shows up on your Notice of Financial Determination (Form UC-44F) as a separate line item. If it is missing and you believe you qualify, appeal within 21 days of the determination date, as shown in the "Right to Appeal" section of your notice.

Does the Dependent Allowance Affect Partial Benefits

No. The dependent allowance is a separate amount. The Partial Benefit Credit is calculated as 30% of your Weekly Benefit Rate, without adding the dependent allowance to the WBR first.

For the full breakdown of benefit calculations, dependent rules, and partial earnings math, the Pennsylvania Unemployment Claim Guide covers every piece of the financial determination.
