Florida Unemployment Payment Methods — Direct Deposit, Way2Go Card and Back Pay

Two Payment Options

FloridaCommerce pays Reemployment Assistance benefits electronically, except for people who were receiving paper warrants on July 1, 2011, and continue that claim. New claimants choose between two methods in the Reconnect portal:

Direct deposit goes straight to a checking or savings account you specify. You need your bank's routing number and your account number. Payments typically appear within 1–2 business days after FloridaCommerce releases them.

Way2Go debit card is a state-issued prepaid card administered by Conduent. If you do not set up direct deposit, FloridaCommerce mails a Way2Go card to your address on file. The card works at ATMs and point-of-sale terminals. First-time cards can take 7–10 business days to arrive by mail, which delays your first payment compared to direct deposit.

You can switch between payment methods at any time through your Reconnect dashboard.

When Payments Are Released

After you complete biweekly certification, FloridaCommerce reviews the two weeks you claimed and, if no holds are active, releases payment. The typical timeline from certification to deposit is 2–4 business days for direct deposit.

Several things can delay this timeline:

  • Identity verification hold — payments are frozen until you complete ID.me verification
  • Fact-finding adjudication — if your employer contests your separation, benefits are held pending a determination
  • Monetary determination pending — if base-period wages are being verified
  • Missed certification window — if you certified late, the payment for those weeks may require a manual request through the Help Center

The Reconnect portal shows a payment history tab where you can track which weeks have been released, pending, or held.

How Back Pay and Retroactive Payments Work

If your claim was held up by adjudication or identity verification, and the hold is later resolved in your favor, FloridaCommerce pays all eligible weeks retroactively — but only if you filed biweekly certifications on time for each of those weeks.

This is the single most important rule about back pay: you must certify every two weeks even while your claim is in limbo. If you skip certifications because you assume you will not be paid, those weeks are forfeited. There is no way to go back and certify weeks you missed after the reporting window closes (unless you request missed weeks through the Help Center, which is not guaranteed).

Retroactive payments typically release within one to two weeks after the hold is cleared, all at once for the accumulated weeks.

Tax Withholding on Payments

Reemployment Assistance is exempt from Florida state income tax but fully taxable under federal law. During your initial application, you can elect a flat 10% federal income tax withholding. If you skip withholding, you will owe the taxes when you file your federal return.

FloridaCommerce issues Form 1099-G by January 31 each year, showing total benefits paid and any federal taxes withheld. Access it electronically through Reconnect or by mail.

Common Payment Problems

Payment shows "processed" but hasn't arrived: Direct deposit releases can take 1–2 business days. If it has been more than four business days, check that your banking details are correct in Reconnect and contact FloridaCommerce at 1-833-352-7759.

Way2Go card not received: Allow 7–10 business days after your first approved certification. If the card does not arrive, call Conduent's Way2Go customer service to request a replacement. Meanwhile, switch to direct deposit in Reconnect so future payments are not delayed.

Payment amount is wrong: Check your monetary determination letter — it shows your weekly benefit amount and how earnings, severance, or other income was deducted. The Florida Unemployment Claim Guide includes a worksheet for verifying your benefit calculation against the statutory formula.
