How to File for Unemployment in California

File During Your First Week Without Work

The clock starts the week you lose income. California's Employment Development Department (EDD) sets your claim's effective date as the Sunday of the week you submit your application — and you cannot backdate it to earlier weeks without proving good cause for the delay. Filing in the first week of unemployment protects your benefit timeline.

You can apply through three channels: online via the myEDD portal, by phone at 1-800-300-5616 (Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Pacific, excluding state holidays), or by mailing paper Form DE 1101I. Online is fastest; paper applications take additional processing time.

Gather Your Documents Before You Start

EDD's application asks for specific details you will not remember off the top of your head. Pull these together before you open the portal:

  • Social Security number (or Alien Registration number for authorized non-citizens)
  • California Driver's License or State ID number
  • 18 months of employment history — legal employer names, physical work addresses, employer identification numbers (FEIN) if you have them, start and end dates, and gross earnings at each job
  • Separation reason and supporting documents — layoff notice, final pay stub, reduction-in-force letter
  • DD-214 (Member 4) if you separated from military service, or SF-8/SF-50 for federal civilian employment

Getting even one employer name or date wrong can trigger an EDD review that stalls your first payment. An employment history log that records every job from the past 18 months — dates, gross pay, and the reason you left — keeps the application accurate.

Walk Through the Online Filing Process

  1. Create a myEDD account at the EDD website if you do not already have one. This is the single sign-on gateway that routes you into UI Online.
  2. Start a new unemployment claim inside UI Online. The system walks you through screens covering your identity, work history, and separation details.
  3. Complete identity verification. EDD now routes most applicants through Socure for online identity proofing directly in the myEDD portal. If additional review is needed, you may be guided to ID.me for further verification. If automated verification fails, EDD may mail you Form DE 1326C requesting photocopies of identity documents within 10 calendar days.
  4. Submit your application and save the confirmation. Your claim's effective date is the Sunday of the week you submitted — even if you filed on a Thursday.
  5. Wait for your Notice of Unemployment Insurance Award (Form DE 429Z). This letter shows your weekly benefit amount, the wages EDD found under your Social Security number, and the base period used. If any employer or wage entry is wrong, contact EDD within 30 calendar days of the date printed on the notice.

Understand the Unpaid Waiting Week

Each 52-week benefit year has one unpaid waiting week. This is the first eligible week of your claim — you must certify for it, but EDD will not pay benefits for that week. This is a state law requirement under CUIC § 1253(d), not a processing delay.

After the waiting week, if you are otherwise eligible, payments begin for the following certification period.

What Happens After Filing

Within a few weeks EDD will mail your DE 429Z award notice. You will also begin receiving certification prompts in UI Online every two weeks. Each certification covers two completed calendar weeks (ending on Saturday), and asks whether you were able and available to work, looked for work, refused any job offers, and earned any money.

If EDD has questions about your separation — for instance, if your employer reported a discharge rather than a layoff — they may schedule an eligibility interview (Form DE 4800 phone call). Answer the scheduled call; if you miss it, contact EDD the same day. EDD may make a decision based on the information available if it cannot reach you.

The California Unemployment Claim Guide walks through every step from document assembly through certification and work search, with fillable worksheets for tracking your employment history, earnings, and weekly job contacts.
