Ohio Unemployment Debit Card and Direct Deposit
Your Two Payment Options
When you file your Ohio unemployment claim, you choose one of two ways to receive benefits:
Direct deposit into a bank account — Ohio allows it only to a financial institution with a physical location in the state that you can access to resolve disputes with the institution. If your account does not meet that requirement, you'll need a qualifying account or the debit card.
U.S. Bank ReliaCard — Ohio's official prepaid Visa debit card for unemployment payments. ODJFS mails the card in a plain white envelope for security. If you've already been issued a ReliaCard from a previous claim, the state will load funds onto your existing card.
Activating Your ReliaCard
When your card arrives, activate it online at usbankreliacard.com or call cardholder services at 855-254-9198. You'll set a PIN and verify your identity. Don't skip this step — funds deposited to an inactive card just sit there until you activate.
ReliaCard Fees
The fee structure is straightforward:
- Purchases at stores and online — $0
- In-network ATM withdrawals (U.S. Bank or MoneyPass network) — $0
- Out-of-network ATM withdrawals — $1.50, plus whatever the ATM operator charges
- Inactivity fee — $1.50/month, but only after 365 consecutive days of no activity
The in-network ATM fee is the important detail. U.S. Bank and MoneyPass ATMs are common across Ohio, so most people can withdraw cash for free. Check the MoneyPass locator or the U.S. Bank ATM finder to find the nearest zero-fee machine.

When Payments Arrive
After ODJFS processes your weekly certification and shows a payment as "paid" with a date, funds typically reach your account or card within 24 to 48 hours of that date. Direct deposit may arrive slightly faster than the debit card, but the difference is usually within the same window.
If your payment shows as paid but nothing arrived after 48 hours, check your account inbox on unemployment.ohio.gov for any holds or required actions. Common stalls include identity verification flags, pending fact-finding responses, and breaks in weekly filing.
Switching Payment Methods
You can update your payment method through the OJI portal at unemployment.ohio.gov. If you're switching to direct deposit, have your routing number and account number ready. Changes usually take effect on the next payment cycle, not retroactively.
Protect Your Card
Treat the ReliaCard like a bank card. Don't share your PIN, and report lost or stolen cards immediately to U.S. Bank at 855-254-9198. ODJFS also warns against sharing your OJI portal login credentials with anyone — third-party filing is prohibited unless formal power of attorney is in place.
