Ohio Unemployment Waiting Week
What the Waiting Week Is
Ohio requires one unpaid waiting week per benefit year. It's typically the first week you're eligible after filing your initial claim. You won't receive any payment for that week — it functions like a deductible on an insurance policy.
This isn't new or pandemic-related. Ohio has required a waiting week for years under ORC 4141.29(B), and no legislative change has eliminated it as of 2026.
You Must Still File for the Waiting Week
Here's where people trip up: even though the waiting week is unpaid, you still have to file a weekly certification for it. If you skip the certification because you figure there's no point — no money coming anyway — your claim stalls. ODJFS won't advance your claim to payable status until that waiting week certification is on file.
Everything you'd normally do during a paid week applies during the waiting week too. Complete your work search activities, report any earnings, answer the eligibility questions honestly, and file on time.
When Does the Waiting Week Happen?
The waiting week is almost always the first eligible week of your new benefit year. If you file your initial claim on a Monday, the current Sunday-through-Saturday week is typically your first week of the claim, and it becomes the waiting week.
You only serve one waiting week per benefit year, not per claim. If you reopen your claim later in the same benefit year after a break, you don't serve another waiting week.

What Comes After
Once the waiting week is filed and your identity verification and monetary determination clear, your next certified week becomes your first payable week. If everything processes smoothly, you could see your first payment roughly two to three weeks after filing your initial claim — one week of waiting, one week of certification, and a couple of days for processing and payment.
Delays happen when identity verification flags, employer protests, or missing information slow down the pipeline. The waiting week itself doesn't cause delays, but skipping it does.
Plan for That First Unpaid Week
Our Ohio Unemployment Claim Guide maps out the entire timeline from filing through first payment, including what to expect during the waiting week and how to avoid the certification gap that stalls so many first-time claims.
