PA Unemployment RESEA Program
You got an email or letter about something called RESEA and you are wondering whether it is real, optional, or a scam. It is real, and if you are selected you generally must participate; not participating may make you ineligible for benefits for that week.
What RESEA Actually Is
RESEA stands for Reemployment Services and Eligibility Assessment. It is a federal program that Pennsylvania runs through PA CareerLink centers. The state uses statistical profiling to select claimants who are most likely to exhaust their benefits, and those selected must participate unless they qualify for an exception.
The appointment itself is straightforward: a CareerLink staff member reviews your work search logs, helps you develop or update a reemployment plan, and connects you with local labor market data and job leads. It is not a compliance interrogation — it is designed to help you find work faster.
You Cannot Skip It
If you are selected for RESEA, you must participate unless you have already completed similar services or have a justifiable reason for not participating. If you do not participate, you may be ineligible for benefits during the week you were required to attend. You get two opportunities — if you miss both, you may be ineligible for both weeks, for a maximum loss of two weeks of benefits.
Good cause for missing an appointment includes documented illness, a job interview that conflicts with the scheduled time, or a family emergency. "I did not see the notice" or "I thought it was optional" does not qualify.
How to Schedule or Reschedule
Your RESEA notice will include scheduling instructions. Many appointments can now be self-scheduled through the PA CareerLink system, and some are offered virtually. If the scheduled time conflicts with a job interview or work obligation, contact your assigned CareerLink center as soon as possible to reschedule. Rescheduling before the appointment is far easier than trying to cure a missed one after the fact.
Bring your work search log to the appointment. The staff member will review it against Pennsylvania's requirements — two job applications plus one qualifying reemployment activity per week (or one application for weeks when you are working part-time with a reduced benefit). Having a complete, organized log makes the appointment faster and demonstrates compliance.

RESEA and Work Search Exemption
If you are required to participate in RESEA at a PA CareerLink, you are exempt from the weekly work search requirements for that week. You do not need to combine the appointment with two job applications to meet that week's requirement.
The Pennsylvania Unemployment Claim Guide covers RESEA compliance along with a printable work search log template that matches PA's UC-304 standards.
