EDD Money Network Card: California Unemployment Payments

How EDD Sends Your Money

California EDD offers three unemployment payment methods: direct deposit to your personal bank account, a Money Network prepaid debit card, or a mailed check. The Bank of America debit cards that EDD used previously have been retired — Money Network is the current card provider.

Unless you select another payment method, EDD sends a Money Network card by mail after your first payment is approved. The card is a prepaid Mastercard that works at ATMs, point-of-sale terminals, and for online purchases. EDD also offers mailed checks.

Setting Up Direct Deposit

Direct deposit is the fastest way to get paid. You can set it up in UI Online under your payment preferences by entering your bank routing number and account number. Payments usually arrive within three days after EDD approves them. The first Money Network card generally arrives 7 to 10 days after approval; later card payments are generally available within two days after approval.

Switch to direct deposit early — ideally before your first payable certification processes. If you set it up after EDD already issued a card payment, future payments go to your bank account, but anything already loaded to the card stays there.

When Payment Does Not Show Up

A missing payment almost always means one of these:

Your certification has not processed yet. EDD typically processes payments within a few days of certification. Check your UI Online claim status. If it shows "Paid," the money is on its way; if it shows "Pending," there is an issue holding the payment.

An identity or eligibility hold. If EDD still needs identity verification or has flagged your claim for an eligibility interview, payments stay frozen until the hold clears. Check UI Online messages and the Claim Status Tracker for any requests from EDD.

Your debit card has not arrived. First-time Money Network cards generally arrive 7 to 10 days after EDD approves the first payment. If it has not arrived after that period, contact Money Network at 1-800-684-7051.

Excessive earnings. If you reported enough part-time income that your payable benefit dropped to $0 for that week, UI Online shows "Excessive Earnings" — no payment is issued, but your claim is still active.

Protecting Your Card

Treat the Money Network card like a bank account. Do not share your card number or PIN. If the card is lost or stolen, contact Money Network immediately to freeze it and request a replacement. EDD warns against submitting personal account information to unofficial "claim tracker" websites that are not affiliated with the state.

For any payment questions that UI Online cannot answer, EDD's customer service line is 1-800-300-5616 (Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Pacific, excluding state holidays). The EDD Benefit Overpayment Section has a separate line at 1-800-676-5737 for overpayment-related payment issues.

The California Unemployment Claim Guide walks through the full payment setup process and includes a notice-tracking log for documenting EDD correspondence when payments stall.
