EDD Direct Deposit Setup and myEDD Account: Getting Your California Unemployment Payments Faster
Setting Up Your myEDD Account
Your myEDD account is the single gateway to California's unemployment system. Filing a claim, certifying for benefits, checking your payment status, and responding to EDD correspondence all happen through this portal.
To create your myEDD account, go to myEDD and select "Log In Or Create Account," then "Create Account." You'll need a personal, non-shared email address, a password, a security question and answer, a login verification method, and a phone number. The verification code confirms your sign-in.
myEDD gives you access to UI Online — the specific system where unemployment claims live. If you have not already been registered for UI Online, you may need to complete its secondary registration with your name, date of birth, Social Security number, and EDD Customer Account Number (EDDCAN). UI Online is where you file, certify every two weeks, check your claim status, and read messages from EDD.
If you already have a myEDD account from a previous claim or from using another EDD service (State Disability Insurance, Paid Family Leave), you don't need a new myEDD account. Follow any UI Online registration steps EDD requests.
Choosing a Payment Option
EDD offers three payment options: direct deposit, a Money Network prepaid debit card, or a mailed check. Unless you select another option, EDD defaults to the Money Network card.
Direct deposit sends benefit payments directly to your personal checking or savings account. Funds usually arrive within three days after EDD approves payment, though timing can vary by bank and weekends or holidays. This is the fastest way to receive your money.
Money Network prepaid debit card is a physical card mailed to your address on file. EDD loads payments onto the card, and you use it like a regular debit card for purchases or ATM withdrawals. The initial card delivery takes time — if you're waiting for your first card after your first payment is issued, expect some delay in accessing funds.
Mailed check is the third option; EDD says checks generally arrive 7 to 10 days after payment approval. Direct deposit is faster, avoids the wait for a physical card, and avoids fees that may apply to some Money Network ATM withdrawals. It also does not have the balance limits that come with prepaid cards. If you have a bank account, direct deposit is the better option for most people.
How to Set Up Direct Deposit
To set up or change your payment method inside UI Online:
- Log into myEDD and open UI Online.
- Select Register or Manage > Profile > Benefit Payment Option > Update Your Payment Option.
- Select Direct Deposit, then save.
- Enter your bank's routing number and account number, confirm whether it is checking or savings, and submit the requested disclosures.
A wrong routing or account number can delay your payment, so double-check every digit against your bank's records. If you switch from the Money Network card to direct deposit mid-claim, the change applies to future payments. Any payment already issued to the card stays on the card.

Troubleshooting Common Account Issues
Can't log in. myEDD uses multi-factor authentication. If you changed your phone number and can't receive the verification code, you'll need to contact EDD to update your account contact information. The UI Online technical support line (1-833-978-2511) handles portal access issues, though those representatives cannot access claim or payment details.
Account locked after failed login attempts. Multiple incorrect password entries trigger a temporary lockout. Wait the specified period before trying again, or use the password reset option. Don't create a second account — that creates processing conflicts.
Identity verification prompt. EDD uses Socure for identity verification through myEDD. If additional verification is needed, EDD may request ID.me or paper documents. Follow the deadline and instructions in EDD's request; identity review may need to be completed before benefits are paid.
Portal errors during certification. If UI Online crashes or times out while you're certifying, don't assume it went through. Log back in and check whether the certification was saved. If not, complete it again. You can also certify by phone using EDD Tele-Cert (1-866-333-4606, available 24/7) as a backup method.
Keeping Your Account Secure
Your myEDD account contains sensitive personal and financial information. Basic precautions matter:
- Use a strong, unique password you don't reuse on other sites
- Don't share your login credentials with anyone
- Be cautious of phishing emails claiming to be from EDD — the real EDD communicates through your UI Online inbox, not through random email links
- If you suspect unauthorized access to your account, report it immediately through EDD's fraud reporting channels
