$0 Pennsylvania Unemployment Claim Checklist

PA Unemployment Documents Needed

You are about to file a Pennsylvania unemployment claim and the application wants specific information that you may not have sitting in front of you. Gathering everything before you start prevents the kind of mid-application errors that delay your claim by weeks.

Personal Identity Documents

You need your Social Security number and, if you are a non-citizen, work authorization information. If Pennsylvania prompts you to verify your identity through ID.me, you will need valid identity documents for that process.

Have a valid email address ready. If you select email notifications, Pennsylvania sends an alert when a fact-finding questionnaire is waiting in your UC account; the questionnaire itself is not emailed. Check your account for each questionnaire and its stated due date.

Employment History for the Past 18 Months

The application asks for employer information for the past 18 months. For each employer, have the employer's name, address, and phone number; the PA UC account number if known; your first and last day worked; and the reason you left. The state can look up an employer by its legal name if you do not know its PA UC account number.

If you worked for a temp agency, staffing company, or had multiple assignments, each one may count as a separate employer. Gathering this information ahead of time is worth the effort — missing or incorrect employer data causes wage discrepancies on your financial determination that take weeks to resolve through a wage protest.

Pay Stubs and Earnings Records

Keep your final pay stubs and any gross earnings summaries from the past 18 months accessible. These are your backup if the wages reported on your financial determination (Form UC-44F) do not match what you actually earned. W-2s from the base period are particularly useful because they show the FEIN and total wages by employer.

If you received severance pay, have the total amount, the payment schedule, and any documentation of the severance agreement. Pennsylvania uses a specific formula to determine whether and how severance offsets your benefits, and the numbers from your agreement are what L&I will need.

Separation Documentation

How you separated from your most recent employer is one of the most important pieces of the application. You need the precise reason: laid off due to lack of work, position eliminated, contract ended, hours reduced, fired, or resigned. If you have a written layoff notice, WARN Act notice, or termination letter, keep it ready.

The way you describe your separation on the initial application matters. Vague or inconsistent language can trigger a non-monetary review that delays benefits for weeks. Stick to the factual sequence of events.

Banking Information

For direct deposit setup, you need your bank routing number and account number. If you prefer the Money Network prepaid debit card, you can skip this — the card is mailed after you are determined financially eligible and must be activated when it arrives.

Once a payment date appears in your UC dashboard, L&I says to expect the payment by debit card or direct deposit within one to two business days. If your claim has an eligibility issue, Pennsylvania says the first payment to a debit card can take four to six weeks; after the first payment, later card payments generally arrive within two to three days after you file your weekly claim.

The Pennsylvania Unemployment Claim Guide includes a pre-filing document checklist that covers every item you need before opening the UC portal.
